Welcome to General Surgery

General Surgery

Preparing for Surgery

  • Do not eat or drink anything after midnight the night before surgery.
  • Do not use alcohol or tobacco within 24 hours of surgery.
  • You will be instructed which medications to take on the day of surgery.
  • Shower or bathe the night before or the morning of your surgery using an antibacterial soap. This will minimize the chance of infection.
  • Wear casual, comfortable clothing. If you are staying overnight, a hospital gown, robe and slippers will be provided. If you prefer, you are welcome to bring your own.
  • Children are encouraged to bring a comfort item, such as a favorite toy, stuffed animal or blanket.
  • Do not wear make-up, nail polish, hair product or jewelry. All piercings must be removed prior to surgery. Please leave your valuables at home.
  • Eyeglasses, contact lenses and dentures may need to be removed. Please bring the proper container/case with you.
  • If you develop a cold, fever, sore throat or generally do not feel well 24-48 hours prior to surgery, please contact your physician.

  • Plan to arrive at the hospital 60-90 minutes prior to your scheduled procedure, unless otherwise instructed.
  • Bring your insurance/Medicare card.
  • Check in at Admitting on the lower level by the Emergency Department.
  • Please plan to have a family member or caregiver remain at the hospital during your surgery.
  • Patients under the age of 18 must be accompanied by their parent/guardian who will sign the consents for surgery and remain on-site throughout the surgical process.
  • You will be asked to change into a hospital gown and we will begin preparations for surgery in a private pre-op area. The anesthesiologist and your surgeon will meet with you to verify your health history, medications, allergies and procedure. A surgical consent will be signed after all of your questions have been answered.
  • Family and visitors (limit 2 at a time) may visit you in pre-op after preparations for your surgery are complete. They may remain with you until surgery.
  • Family and visitors are asked to clean their hands when entering and leaving your room. Hand sanitizer is located throughout the hospital.

  • Following your surgery you will be cared for in a recovery area. When you reach a certain point in your recovery (same day surgery) or you are taken to your room (overnight) family and visitors are welcome to join you.
  • We will do everything possible to make you comfortable during this time.
  • Discharge instructions will be reviewed with you and your responsible adult family member/caregiver. Prescriptions may be filled here or called to your pharmacy of choice.
