Regions Hospital earns reverification as Level I Trauma Center

February 15, 2022

ST. PAUL, Minn. — Regions Hospital, the first hospital in Minnesota to be verified as both a Level I Adult and Pediatric Trauma Center, has been reverified by the American College of Surgeons (ACS).

The ACS recently sent reviewers to Regions, who found the hospital up to its high standards that recognize dedication to providing optimal care for injured patients. They officially reverified Regions as an Adult Level I and Pediatric Level I Trauma Center.

“Being a Level I Trauma Center for both children and adults means we have all the expertise and specialists to care for a family in one place,” said Dr. Uroghupatei Iyegha, Director of Trauma Services. “During a crisis, it’s so important that family members aren’t forced to split time at different locations.”

The ACS’s Committee on Trauma has five separate categories of verification. Each category has specific criteria that must be met by a facility seeking that level of verification. Reviewers visiting Regions found no deficiencies in approving the reverification through January 2025.

Regions was designated as a Level I Trauma Center for adults in 1993, providing care for injured children as well. The ACS later raised standards to require separate trauma certification for children, and Regions was granted Level I certification for pediatrics in 2009. Regions and Gillette Children’s Specialty Healthcare share a facility and work together to provide care to children.
