Thursday, January 10, 2019 - A taste of hospital life for the next generation

Lakeview Hospital invests in the future generation of health care professionals through its annual Explorers Program.

The 2018 cohort of students graduated on Dec. 10 from the six-week immersion into a variety of areas of the hospital.

The popular Explorers Program is offered through the Boy Scouts of America’s Northern Star Council and lets around 30 young people, ages 14-20, explore potential health care careers in a real-world setting.

This year, participants took part in sample sessions ranging from Pharmacy, Birth Center and Emergency Department, to Surgery, Physical Medicine and Radiology. They heard from audiologists, dietitians, nurses, paramedics, surgeons and more.

“It’s a really interesting look at the inner mechanisms of the hospital,” said Kate Nelson, of Lake Elmo. “You get to see the idiosyncrasies that happen in the day-to-day that you wouldn’t see during a regular visit to the clinic or by watching a romanticized version on a TV medical drama.”

Students in this year's program included:

  • Stillwater: Bryn Carter, Paxton Grobe, Lauren Hill, Elsa Huckels, Connor Kapfer, Steph Pidde, Macie Senn, Maria Vincent;
  • Lake Elmo: Briahna Amundson, Kate Nelson, Kate Pelletier, Sydney Peterson, Lauren Smithberg, Chloe Squires, Olivia Velte, Sydney Wallace, Evelyn Young, Joseph Young.
  • Woodbury: Colin Muehlbauer, Clare Roti, Jack Seipel,
  • Afton: Kathryn Raddatz
  • West Lakeland: Chloe Wienholz
  • Hudson: Aubree Clausnitzer
  • Dayton: Anna Heltemes
  • Inver Grove Heights: Rheanna Deal
  • Osceola: Katherine Jennings, Travis Jennings

The Explorers Program is just one of the community education courses offered at Lakeview Hospital. Check the full range of offerings under the Classes tab at healthpartnerslocalcare.org.
