Wednesday, October 03, 2018 - Final Affairs Conference will address tough end-of-life personal and legal planning issues

“One day we will die, Snoopy,” says Charlie Brown. “Yes,” says Snoopy, “but every other day we will live!”

The Peanuts comic strip characters got it right. And that’s where the Final Affairs Conference comes in.

Lakeview Hospital Homecare & Hospice and Comfort Keepers are teaming up to present a free, one-day conference to equip seniors, caregivers and adult children with information and resources for personal and legal end-of-life affairs planning. Attendees will proactively address matters to know they will leave family members and loved ones best placed after their passing.

Did you know:

  • Just 44 percent of Americans have a will (2016 Gallup poll).
  • While 63 percent of people feel it is important to communicate their funeral wishes prior to death, just 21 percent have done so (National Funeral Directors Association study, 2017).
  • According to a report by the Kaiser Family Foundation, seniors find it frustrating and difficult to compare Medicare plans (2014 KFF report).
  • Just one-third of adult Americans have completed an advance health care directive, spelling out their wishes for medical care in the event they can’t make their own decisions (Health Affairs study, 2017).

“Whether you’re planning your own end-of-life care and affairs or assisting a loved one with their preparations, this conference aims to demystify complex topics,” said Brienna Schuette conference organizer and community representative with Lakeview Homecare and Hospice. “Our goal is to offer attendees the resources needed to proactively organize personal and legal matters that become more challenging over time.”

Four workshop sessions, led by local experts in their fields, will focus on:

  • Advance care planning and care levels
  • Elder law and estate planning
  • Funeral pre-planning
  • Medicare alphabet soup

The conference will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday, November 2 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Stillwater. Lunch is provided and there will be a chance to meet with regional vendors during breaks. Although it’s free to attend, space is limited so reserve your spot now. Register by calling 651-430-5826.
